HOW TO
Write a PersonalBio
By

he world doesn’t need more LinkedIn optimized bios. Haven’t we seen enough “passionate, dynamic professionals” by now?
Here’s the thing: Bios are an easy way to stand-out because people are so afraid to take risks with them. They focus so much on sounding impressive that they forget to connect with the reader on the other side of the screen.
There’s no Corporate Speak in Grimes’ bio. It’s quirky and personal and refreshingly candid. At this point, you might be thinking to yourself: “But she’s an artist and I’m not.” But that’s cope.
Sure she talks about drugs and death, but that’s not why her bio has life. It’s compelling because she shows her personality, shares her struggles, references her genuine interests, and leans into distinct language like bludgeoned and speed binge.
A bio has three jobs: tell your story, show your vibe, and list your achievements.
Most people only focus on their achievements — and that’s why they’re so boring to read (and besides, people are more likely to celebrate your achievements if they know about what you’ve overcome in order to get there).
So take a cue from Grimes and ditch the posturing. The goal isn’t to be shocking — it’s to be real. And that works in any industry.
